Rishworth Calls for a Youth Strategy, Here’s One We Prepared Earlier
On the 25th of November Amanda Rishworth, Shadow Minister for Youth, called for a Youth Recovery Strategy. Here’s one we prepared earlier.
The National Youth Commission Australia (NYCA) has proposed a Youth Futures Guarantee: A new deal for young people – a comprehensive strategy that will enable young people to get a relevant education, a secure job with decent pay and a life they have reason to value.
The Youth Futures Guarantee proposes:
NYCA Chair, David Eldridge AM, said young people were already doing it tough with insecure work, low wages and high unemployment and underemployment. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it much harder.
“The Commission welcomes Amanda Rishworth’s call for a Youth Recovery Strategy.”
“The NYCA has done the work and produced a comprehensive set of recommendations that should be adopted by all Australian Governments. The Youth Futures Guarantee will help young people to thrive.”
Youth Commissioner, Sophie Johnston, said as the economy recovers, young people must not be left behind.
“We must learn from the Global Financial Crisis where youth employment had not recovered to pre-GFC levels ten years later.”
“One lesson to learn is to engage young people in the policy process.”
“Young people have been central in the development of the Guarantee. They are Commissioners. They presented at public hearings, participated in workshops and wrote submissions.”
Chair of the NYCA Inquiry into Youth Employment David Eldridge and Youth Commissioner Sophie Johnson are available for interview.
