The National Youth Homelessness Conference Is Back

The National Youth Homelessness Conference Is Back

In 6 months, we housed 40,000…it shouldn’t take a pandemic to energize governments to confront youth homelessness.

According to recent reporting, in the first six months of COVID-19 the states that launched emergency programs housed more than 40,000 rough sleepers and others. Of this number, it is predicted that many will have returned to the streets or to homeless shelters. Rough sleeper numbers have increased in Adelaide and Sydney after mid-year.

The fact that we were able to quickly respond to the vulnerability of our homeless population during COVID-19 shows there is no reason for people, especially young people, to be sleeping rough. It shouldn’t take a pandemic to energise governments, both state and federal, to confront this issue.

If we have the capacity to provide emergency and longer-term housing solutions for those experiencing homelessness then we should regardless of the public health or economic situation at the time.

We need to act to #endyouthhomelessness now, once and for all. There are no more excuses for failing to address this issue.

Join us at the 2nd National Youth Homelessness Conference (Virtual) on 15th-16th of June and contribute your ideas to a National Strategy to end youth homelessness.

Unlike other for-profit conferences on issues of homelessness, all proceeds from this event are going directly back into the development of a National Strategy to end youth homelessness.
